This DVD visits Hall Green in Birmingham to look at this leafy suburb, its buildings, its watercourses, its history and the origins of many of its place names.

Hall Green today is a delightful suburb of South Birmingham. As estate agents would say, “It is in a desirable much sought after location”. At first glance it may seem to have a history no older than the many 1930’s houses so evident. It certainly has retained more open space than many city suburbs and deserves the description ‘leafy’.

Our look at Hall Green, however, discovers a great deal of fascinating history plus some beautiful views of pieces of countryside, that have remained intact despite urbanisation.

The DVD sets out to explain the origin of many place names within Hall Green, and introduces such long gone names of great charm as - Short Sheets, Clattens, Rickyard Piece, Six Days Work and Great Gussetts.

Hall Green was the birthplace of Tony Hancock and the home of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the 20th century world best seller 'The Hobbit'. Sarehole Mill and the surrounding area, upon which Tolkien based much of his writings, feature in this DVD.

This is an archive DVD that we continue to sell because of its popularity.

This is a brand new shrink-wrapped DVD which we, as the copyright holder and producer of the DVD, duplicated and which we sell on our site and on eBay.

Customer comments

"May I send you a copy of the first paragraph of a letter dated 14 June from my cousin in Australia:- "First of all, many, many thanks for the super video. What a lovely surprise it was to receive it and to visit down memory lane. I have watched it twice so far and learnt so much about Hall Green, the history and old homes - the video certainly made Hall Green look a very special place. It even showed Gresham Road - once known as Daisy Green! - the Beacon Insurance Building where we both once worked, Hall Green School and, of course, the Church. So many things brought back so many happy memories. The Robin Hood Cinema, Robin Hood Island (how tiny it was in 1925). Even Hall Green in the snow looked beautiful. I can't thank you enough for sending me such a thoughtful gift, I know I will watch it many times, even the music is lovely." - I, too, add my sincere thanks for responding so promptly to my request and for having the inspiration and the energy to produce the video in the first place!" (Mrs Witcomb, Birmingham, UK)

"I have lived in Hall Green for over 30 years and thought I knew it, but you have taught me a thing or two - well done." (Mr Bramley, Birmingham, UK)

"Thank you very much indeed for the video on Hall Green. I have now watched the video and I think it is marvellous, very professional and thoroughly enjoyable. Your coverage of the Hall Green suburb and the information you give is amazing. I would like to wish you all every success in your business, and once again, sincere thanks." (Mrs Collins, Birmingham, UK)

"Please let me have another video. I was thrilled with it. We used to live in Bushmore Rd (for 40 years) and never knew about the name. Thank you." (Mrs Ward, Birmingham, UK)
